How to Use Amazon to Determine the Market for Your Ebook

I am going to assume that you want to sell all the books or information products you create.

I am also going to assume that you want to maximize sales of those products.

The most important first step in this process is determining whether there is a market of hungry buyers who have money to spend on your books/products.

Fact is, Amazon.com is an excellent tool for conducting market research.  In the video post below, I show exactly how to conduct this market research.

First, I introduce you to Amazon.com and explain why it is such an excellent tool.

Next, I explain the significance of the Amazon.com bestseller rank.

Then, I explain how to evaluate the Amazon.com bestseller ranking in determining whether there is a viable market.

Last, we pull it all together to show you how to evaluate multiple books to give you the best indication of whether there is a market or not.

So now that you have a road map of where we are going, let’s get to it…

I’d love to know what you think about this strategy…just leave your thoughts in the comments below…

  1. Thanks for an informative ‘how to’ video. I’m sure Roxanne came up with the great idea about poodles… What a gorgeous dog.

  2. Thank your for the useful information. I already have two e-books on kindle. Now I have one more research source.

  3. Thanks for the excellent information, Daniel. It’s good to know the actual numbers. You are very helpful!

  4. This is extremely helpful, Daniel. I’ve watched many of your webinars, so I’ve seen some of your training on this before, but this was especially helpful in helping us make sense of those sales numbers and put them in perspective. I’m scheduling an Amazon research session on my calendar right now. Thank you.

  5. Great advice and super video! Really appreciate having this information so I can send my clients to it in the future. So helpful.

  6. Daniel,
First, thank you very much for deciphering some of these numbers on Amazon. Figuring them out is almost as bad as trying to figure out Google, thanks for saving us the effort!

    Next, I have two questions:
    1. If a book has both category rankings and the “in books” ranking as you demonstrate here, does either factor provide more insight as far as popularity? In other words, would you use one over the other at any time in deciding how strong a topic is?

    2. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve done title/topic searches in the Kindle store and have had results come back that have nothing to do with what I entered. I’m not entering anything obscure either. The default sort is “relevance” so I have no clue why this happens. Doesn’t help the market research much. Have you/has anyone else experienced this, ideas for better searching?

Thanks again for some really useful info.

    • Cheryl — Thanks so much. I look at the “in books” rankings only because I am trying to grasp a larger picture of the market. Categories aren’t necessarily good indicators of a broader market which I am attempting to discern in this type of research. As to your second question I have not myself had an issue like you describe. Perhaps others can weigh in on this…
