One of the most overlooked sources of income and marketing is repurposing. Your published eBook is full of content waiting to be used for other things that will give you more exposure as an expert and result in more sales of your eBook and other products and services. All this sounds great, but you may still have the common question, “What is repurposing?” You are not alone.
Repurposing is when you take content you’ve already written and develop it into something else. It can be as simple as turning an article into Twitter posts or a chapter of your eBook into an infographic. This article discusses two of five of my personal favorite ways to repurpose my eBooks’ content:
1. EBook to Blog Posts
Some people choose to write their eBooks based off content already on their blogs, which is one form of repurposing (though opposite of what I do). I tend to write the eBook first, and then adapt chapters or sub-sections of chapters into informative blog posts.
When I repurpose eBook content this way, I always make sure to edit it so it reads differently than it does inside the eBook, including oftentimes changing the title. This not only looks like fresh content to readers of my blog who have also bought my eBook, but it keeps me safe from the Kindle gremlins who want to make my eBook “free” because they found the same content on my blog for free, or block my eBook due to “plagiarism” since the content inside my eBook is also on my website, of which both situations are against Amazon’s Terms of Service.
Editing the content first ensures my eBook’s safety from these issues and full compliance with Amazon’s Terms of Service.
At the bottom of each blog post I write a Call to Action stating something like, “This post was adapted from my eBook [eBook Title]. Pick it up for only 99 cents today!” Then I hyperlink the last bit of text—the instruction to “pick it up”—to my eBook’s listing in the Kindle store.
Advanced tip: If you’re a member of the Amazon Associates program, you can link to your eBook on your website with your affiliate link and make a tiny bit of commission off each sale. This can help offset the required percentage Amazon takes from your sales and the download fees they apply to your eBooks.
A Call to Action is important to have at the bottom of every blog post, even if it’s just to comment on the post, because it gets readers in the habit of doing something or clicking something. When they’re trained to click something, it becomes much easier to click through to a site like Amazon.com and make a purchase. Training your readers to take action and click means you will sell more copies of your eBook.
2. Sentences to Social Media Quips
As I mentioned earlier, eBooks are full of content that can be sectioned out for Twitter posts, Facebook statuses and other social media applications. This method of posting consistently keeps your expertise in front of a worldwide audience, which helps build your platform so you can sell more books.
Simply start reading your eBook and copy and paste tips you wrote into another document. You may find some tips are rather long, so try to keep them within the Twitter limit of 140 characters. This ensures you can post in all social media platforms without much editing to the post. Short, juicy tips are best, especially tips that quickly answer the most common questions you get asked.
Once you have your list of tips, quips and posts, schedule them in a program like HootSuite to automatically post. There are other programs like this that help you save time on social media, but I love the simplicity of posting through HootSuite and the agility it gives me to post to five social media outlets at once—including various Facebook pages. I recommend you schedule one post per week or one per day. If you have more than enough content to post one a day, try posting twice a day. The more you post, the more followers you’ll get and the wider your reach will become.
When pre-scheduling your social media posts, always remember to be present in person on the sites where your audience primarily hangs out. If all you do is post quips from your eBook and don’t interact with your audience with comments, “Likes,” etc., people may see your pre-scheduled posts as SPAM and begin avoiding you rather than following you.
Another way to reduce the appearance of your posts as SPAM is to limit the number of times you link to your eBook or website. You can include links in your posts, but they take up valuable character space and if the only posts in your social news streams are posts with links, you will look like a spammer. Interact with your audience and you will earn their trust to click those links when you choose to include them.
